  1. I found this to be an intriguing photography of an obviously lower class alley neighborhood in an unknown urban area that shows some of the residents. The photo seems to be a critical commentary on the living conditions of the urban lower class. The garbage cans on the left of the image reinforce the critical edge of this image.

I like the way the photo frames the neighborhood with the two rows of buildings on each side of the image and the way they form parallel lines out to a distant, and misty (thus somewhat mysterious) vanishing point. The image of the two standing figures on the right are balanced by the two standing on the porch to the left. The sense of depth of the image is reinforced by the small figure of a man off in the distance to the left. The figures leaning out of the windows on the right of the image give a sense of the crowded conditions that must have prevailed in this late 19th century urban environment.

  2. oh yes, thanks a lot for the photo. A remarkable picture and a remarkable photographer, indeed Jacob Riis started as a police reporter and got a very specific fame. I mean, he was very close to police and it would let him be one of the first, whenever there was a 'good' crime scene. He is also known as one of the first American photographers to use flash. A really linteresting gentleman.

  3. I find this a very interesting photograph for several reasons. I really like how he used the sides of the two buildings to frame this picture. I feel as though he gives us a real sense of what life was like back them. Another thing I found unique is how detailed the path is. You can really see each individual brick and it looks as though it's wet.

  4. I love how the photographer seemed to play along with the lighting in the ally. It seems to make all of the subjects stand out a little more.

  5. This image is strong,It may have a lot story. We can see 19th century’s somewhere neighborhood lifestyle; however, it is not beautiful historic town or peaceful residence. There is lower class urban area. People are perfectly composed in the frame and stared the photographer but I feel unpleasant distance between the photographer and people. But it clearly represents their real environment.

  6. This is a powerful photograph by an important photographer. Although you explained why you selected it, you used just one of the required terms (frame). Be sure to read the pdfs posted in Blackboard under Assignments before posting to your blog. You could explain the impact of this image by analyzing the photographer's use of time, vantage point or subject, the other terms from The Photographer's Eye.

  7. I absolutely LOVE this photo... I love the framing with the clothing hanging on the lines above and it's interesting how this is not a candid shot...the people are clearly aware of the camera...
